Something really exciting is happening this year. Last year, we tried to organise our own language exchange which wasn't very successful. This year, the Students Association has launched their own language exchange programme: TANDEM. It's a much bigger project than what we've tried last year, and is already popular!
Language Exchange (Wikipedia: EN/JA) is the best way to practise your foreign language skill. TANDEM helps you find your partner by automatically finding someone on the system whose language information matches with your native and target languages.
Imagine an online version of language exchange cards outside the International Cafe in Buccleuch Place (if you do not know, it's a notice board full of language exchange posts), that magically finds cards that fit your language choice by itself. This programme is unfortunately for the University of Edinburgh students only, running through the myEd portal. Please visit http://www.eusa.ed.ac.uk/tandem to find out all about TANDEM and language exchange in general.
The system was having problems for the first few weeks, but it has been fixed and improved as had been promised by the EUSA official. You might want to try it again if you gave up before.
