The first language class will be on Tuesday the 30th of September in Appleton Tower room M1 from 7.30pm - 9.30pm. The first session will be an orientation session to split you all into groups based on your level. We predict there will be Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced classes this year.

LESSON FORMAT

Beginners will have a two hour session per week. The first hour is with a professional language teacher and will cover new materials. The second hour will be spent practicing writing and conversation skills with native Japanese speakers and students of Japanese at Edinburgh University.

Intermediate and Advanced classes will be organized based on the input of participants.

COURSE TEXTBOOK

For Beginners and Intermediate classes we follow the Japanese for Busy People text book levels 1 and 2 respectively.

You are welcome to order your book now but we will give you the opportunity to order the book through us at the orientation session. Please keep in mind that there are two versions of the textbook available depending whether you wish to learn reading and writing. Hiragana and Katakana (Japanese "alphabet") will be a part of the course but if you only want to learn conversational Japanese then you can easily skip these sections.

Additionally, if you do purchase your own book, please make sure you buy the 3rd edition. Older versions differ significantly.

Advanced classes may follow Busy People 3 or more advanced materials prepared by the teacher.

PRICES

The Beginners class will be running for 10 weeks in first semester and costs £22 for members and £25 for nonmembers. Prices may be subject to change based on turnout. Another option is to pay per lesson which will cost £4 each week.

Intermediate and Advanced classes will also run for 10 weeks and prices will be discussed at the orientation.

The orientation session will be free for members, £1 for nonmembers.

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY JAPANESE SOCIETY

To learn Japanese language effectively it's useful to have an appreciation of the cultural background of Japan. The Japanese society organizes a wide range of social events around both contemporary and traditional Japanese culture. Getting involved at our weekly social nights and at our special events is a great way to practice your Japanese, deepen your understanding of Japans vibrant culture and make some great friends.

To join the society is £3 for the year which gets you discounted entry to all our events and also at Japanese restaurants Bonsai and Koi. There will be an opportunity to join at the orientation session.

LANGUAGE TEACHING

If you are confident with your Japanese ability and wish to volunteer to help language teaching then please also come to the orientation session and we will get you involved. Your help will be much appreciated and will make the learning experience for the pupils of the class even more valuable.
